Sometimes life is not what you expected...

Have you ever had that person that your spouse talked about that you were jealous of.  Yeah, my husband had that girl.  She was a friend that he had known since high school.  She was family of one of his customers that he called on regularly.  When he came home talking about her, it was nails on a chalk board every time he mentioned her name because he always knew so much about her and talked about her in such a high regard.  To put it lightly, I despised her.

Well one day, he announced to me that she had just had a baby and he volunteered me to take her newborn pictures.  WHAT???!!!  NO WAY.  oh...Yes.  He.  Did.

I was sick to my stomach.  Why would he do such a thing?  Now she was on her way to my house and I was a nervous wreck.  I was so irritated.  But I pulled it together as she knocked on my door.  I opened the door there she stood with her precious little baby boy and her darling husband.  She was way cuter than I imagined.  My heart sunk.

They came in and we conducted newborn pictures.  We chatted and got to know each other, and I was so annoyed at how much I really, really liked them.  She was cute AND nice.  How could that be??

Well, fast forward a year and several photo shoots later…. Shonda was pregnant again.

We celebrated Jet's 1st Birthday.

We took maternity pictures.

Next thing I knew I was at the hospital to take their baby girl's hospital pictures, sharing in a special moment with this couple who I now adored beyond words and was fortunate enough to call friends.

This is the reason I do what I do as a photographer.  I was able to document a moment of their lives that I knew they would cherish for ever, but little did I know the extent of how valued that moment was going to be.

Less than three months after the birth of their baby girl, on Saturday, August 23, 2014, Mike Fiore, was in a horrific boating accident.  He was transferred to a  local hospital in Missouri near where the accident happened.   He was expected to make a full recovery.  However, three days later, on August 26, 2014, Mike Fiore, a father, husband, son, a boat builder extraordinaire, and a friend to many, passed away of a pulmonary embolism.

I write this in tears.  Pissed off.  Mad.  That I am yet again having to experience a family being devastated by death.  Yet, I know that God has a bigger plan.  Not sure what that plan is yet. But it is the only thing I can do to fathom this wretched situation.

Yesterday we celebrated Mike's life.  I knew him as a father and a husband.  And yesterday, I learned of the mark he left in the power boat industry.  He was an icon.

He will be missed.

Sometimes life is not what you expect.

I sure never expected to be barbecuing with this little family who knocked on my door one day for newborn pictures.

I gained a friend.

And more, I never expected to help plan this husband's funeral.

She lost a husband.

Take time to enjoy today. Embrace it.  Enjoy it.  Make the most of it.

Sometimes life takes a turn you won't expect….

Today...

This morning, Brady asked me about the picture of the bear from Bass Lake.  The only place I knew were to find it was on my blog.  So, I found my blog and scrolled and scrolled through, found the bear and kept scrolling and scrolled some more.  I skimmed through all my old blog posts.  Most of which were when my boys were so little and so young.  I really enjoyed taking that trip down memory lane.  I wish I took the time to blog like I used to.   To document all those precious moments both good and bad is something I will cherish forever!

So, here I am, sitting at my computer… Taking a brief minute (or 10) to document some feelings that I can later look back on and enjoy.  I don't care if no one ever reads my blog, but someday I will and I'll be glad I took the time.

So with that being said, today I want to take the time to recognize what is going on in my life now.  I had an amazing coffee date yesterday morning with one of my most favorite people, Linda Stephens.  I always take so much away from our dates and feel so content with life.  Life is good.

One of the things we talked about is how
I am so blessed to be part of such an amazing community here in Harlan Ranch. We moved into our new neighborhood almost two years ago.  I could not have asked for a better circle of friends who I consider family.

Here is a few of my favorites who I was lucky to celebrate the big 37 with!

Oh and there is this…. #HHF  High Heel Friday.  We make it mandatory… EVERY FRIDAY… at school drop off.   And we rock it!

And then there's this guy… Who I am happy to have just celebrated 11 years with and am still as in love with as ever!

And our little family.  I could't be happier.  (except maybe if the two orange and black supporters were in blue instead). Actually, I wouldn't change that either. It makes for a super fun household!

And well, now I am off to actually get some work done.  That photography business is rocking more than ever.  Edit. Edit. Edit.  And if you wondering why it it taking me so long to edit your pictures, it's because I am taking more time to blog!  YES!

Later Peeps!

Rock those high heels today!!!

Carson and Brady's Lego Challenge

I am home with two boys that are Lego fanatics!  A friend told me about a Lego Challenge that she saw on Pinterest.  It sounded interesting so I researched it and discovered the a website that had weekly lego challenges to get kids excited about their lego building.  I decided to adopt some of those challenges and invite you in the fun.  What do you think?

I'm going to try and not get to technical here, but here is what I am thinking….

Build the following challenges and post pictures of them on Instagram (with the #carsonandbradyslegochallenge) for all our kids to see and share with one another.

Build the challenges at your own pace.  One a day, or all today!!

Ready, set, BUILD!

1.  Build a Lego Car.  Any car, truck or vehicle... anything with wheels.

2.  Build an electronic device.  Any phone, camera, TV, iPad or computer, etc.

3.  Build an animal.

4.  Build something you'd find in the sky.

5.  Build something with only BLUE legos.

6.  Build a Birthday Cake.  Or cookies or a cupcake, or something sweet!

7.  Build your favorite character.  Minecraft, Pokemon, My Little Pony… you get the idea.

8.  Build a home. A house or building of sort.

9.  Build a Lego Hat.  Can you make one that you can actually wear?

10.  Build your favorite food.  Sandwich, hamburger, taco, fruit salad??

Use your imagination.  Be creative.  Have fun!

Let's get everyone involved and share!!

I am excited to see all your kids and parent creations!!  (you better believe that I am going to build too!!)

Be sure to share your pictures on instagram and hashtag #carsonandbradyslegochallenge and #legochallengenumber)(1-10)

Life

Let's just say this life stuff is hard.  And hectic.  PHEW.  Who knew?

I know I have said it before, but I really would like to start blogging again.  It has been over a year since my last post.  I am ready to start setting aside some "ME" time.  Some time to sort my thoughts and... LIFE.

A brief little update since my last post of what is going on in my life right now.

We just moved (well, in January) to a NEW house in a NEW neighborhood.  The new house and the neighbors had some big shoes to fill as our last house and neighbors were totally amazing.  And well, so far so good.  We LOVE our new house and our new neighborhood couldn't be better!!  To say the least, we have made some amazing friends!!

We are in the process of putting in a rockin' backyard!!

We have a pretty good size backyard.  It has been quite a tedious time consuming process.  I am in dying with anticipation as to how the end result is going to turn out.  If you need a pool guy, I highly recommend Bob with Signature Pools. He has been awesome to work with.

I can't wait to post pictures of the finished project!!

We just celebrated Brady's 4th birthday.  YES, Brady boo just turned FOUR!!  Yikes! Time is flying.

He is obsessed with turtles, the color blue, chocolate milk, his friend Marco and songs on mommy's phone such as Mony Mony by Billy Idol, Some Nights by FUN, When I Was Your Man by Bruno Mars.

My photography business is doing better than ever.  I sometimes have a hard time keeping up as I didn't intend to work as much as I do.    I am very fortunate to have such awesome and loyal clients!!!  Check out my latest work on Facebook and be sure to "LIKE" Patty Schmidt Photography

Steve and I just competed in the Bass Lake Triathlon over the weekend.  It was my 5th Tri that I have competed in.  Every time during the race, I ask my self, "Why am I doing this?" and promise to myself to NEVER do it again.  Yet, I sit here and plot how I am going to shave minutes off my next one!!

Who wants to join me for the Bass Lake Triathlon 2014?

Well, that's a start for tonight....

Hope to see you again soon!

Goodnight.

Lame.

TWO boys.

When Carson wants to irritate Brady, all he has to say is, "Brady, you like the Dodgers!"
Then Brady freaks out and starts screaming "NOOOOO!!"

As you may well know, this is not only comical but complete and pure torture to my ears.

Ugh.

TWO Giants fans.

Really?

Lame.

Resolution...

Is it to late in the year to make a New Year's Resolution?

Because if it's not, I resolve to shower more.

I came across this saying on Pinterest, and it hit a little too close to home for me.

Those of you with kid's know how impossible it is to shower at times. Or when you do shower, you have to hurry because kids are screaming outside the shower. Or BOTH kids demand to take a shower with you. Have you ever tried to shave your legs in the shower with two kids in the shower with you? I don't highly recommend it. However on the other hand, one of my favorite things to do is to take shower... at home, when no one else is home. But unfortunately that occurrence is quite rare.

Also, I have recently been trying to not to wash my hair every day. I have noticed a big difference in the health of my hair by not washing it so much. But I have to remind myself, just because I don't wash my hair doesn't mean I don't have to shower. Sometimes I forget that it IS possible to shower without washing my hair, so I opt for the no shower look all together. This is NO bueno.
Hence, my new resolution.

However, the main problem revolves around this... I am rather far from being a pleasant morning person. So, mornings consist of a coffee IV, throwing on some sweats, disguising myself with a hat and sunglasses, while rushing out of the house in barely enough time to get the kids to school on time.

Then, by the end of the day, my nose starts to wonder... "What is that stench?"

Which is usually followed by:

And thus, leads me back to my March 4, 2012 New Year's Resolution....

I resolve to shower more often.

Preferably every day, even if it means not washing my hair everyday.

I am also pretty sure my husband will appreciate this.

Wish me luck!

If you could make a March New Year's Resolution, what would it be?

Evidence of a Child, Installment I

A few years ago, I wrote about Things you Might Find in a Toaster. I really think a book could be made about the things I find in my house. But then again, as mothers, we always think our kids are funnier than everyone else does, so maybe not.

With kids, you never know what you will find where. Seriously, it is like an easter egg hunt every day, and every once in a while you find that rotten egg from last year.

But very often I will find something out of place, and it will just make me smile. Which leads me to my first installment of, Evidence of a Child... Unexpected things in unexpected places or Things you might find in your toaster. I took a look around the house today and this is what I found.

My night stand...(not to be confused with a ONE night stand). Two hot wheels. Simple, yet a sweet reminder that I am a mother of two car loving boys.

Next I found...
A piece of paper taped to the wall. Really? Why? I have no idea. But Carson refuses to let me remove it. We now just consider it his version of wall art.

Now take a look here...

Don't see it?

Let's take a closer look....

Yep, that is gum.

ABC Gum at it's finest.

The kind you find under the table in restaurants.

Nice.

Cheers to Children.

See you next time for another installment of ...

EVIDENCE OF A CHILD.

BAHM. BAHM. BAHM....

Two Thousand and Twelve...

I have been dictating my next blog over and over in my head for a while now. I wanted to write something profound for my first entry of 2012. But instead I am just sitting here with a laptop on my lap..(fancy that) while my husband is channel surfing. I'm bored so I am going to word vomit. My apologies early.

As I reflect on 2011, I realize how I am want to take 2012 by the horns and take control. 2011 was a year filled with some wonderful weddings, some new babies, some great times with a wonderful family, some picture taking...(ok, lots of picture taking), some loneliness, some tears, some heart felt questions on life and even some therapy.

Yes... Loneliness and tears.

How could that be you ask?

I just hit a place in my life where everything was content. I wasn't chasing a college degree, or some trying to earn a big corporate paycheck, or hunting down a husband to be, or fighting cancer, or busy making babies.... Life well... had become everything I ever dreamed of.

I had it all. Or what I thought was having it all. The family, the house financial security and everything short of the white picket fence. So why was I so miserable. Ok, I wasn't that miserable, but I definitely had my moments of pure sadness.

I had a wonderful husband. I had two beautiful boys. An energetic 2 year old and a high maintenance 4 year old. I struggled with finding joy among the screaming, the never-ending dishes, the never-ending laundry, the wiping butts and the lonely days at home with these needy children that I loved so much. Towards the end of 2011 life was spiraling out of control, overworking myself in my photography business, only to make my stress and anxiety sky rocket.

Then there was therapy.

I just needed to vent and feel as though I wasn't crazy.
I am coming to realize that the stereotypical way of life isn't that glamorous. On the inside it is a lot of work, regardless how easy others make it look.

I am willing to admit that I can't do it by myself. I need help. I need time for me. I need to utilize my resources and make it happen. Even if it means spending a little more money on child care. I am not the type to manage 10 kids, or even 2 for that matter. Everyone is different.

So that brings me to 2012.

Bull. Horns. Taking Control.

Yep. I have a pretty rigorous schedule lined up for these kids. Among it, I have two days to myself for work and or errands. Specific individual date days with each of my precious boys, so I can enjoy time with each of them separately. Time with them together for me to enjoy them, unplugged, no computer. I want to hang out with them and have fun with them. Time allowed for dates with my wonderful husband. And most of all ME time... Pedi's, wine and friends.

I can do this.

Putting on my big girl panties.
Changing my attitude.

Gonna rock it.

I'm not saying that I am going to not have days of tears of being overwhelmed, but hopefully they will be fewer and farer between in 2012 than they were in 2011.

So, CHEERS to 2012.

Let's rock it together.

What do you think?

Monday's Confessions

Wow, I am looking at the clock and I only have 35 minutes (PST) to complete this blog entry to remain in compliance with my own goal undertakings.

I have been putting it off all day because I just couldn't decide what to blog about. I am now up against the clock and going to make it happen. So, I thought I'd reflect a little on my very unproductive day and reveal some confessions in the life of a stay-at-home mommy.

My Monday Confessions...

1. This morning I drove 25 minutes across town to take Carson to school. After dropping him off, Brady and I decided to go to the gym that is near Carson's school. However, Brady left his "Bebe" (aka. baby blanket) at home. He screamed bloody murder for it and refused to go into the gym without it, so I drove all the way home to get it before going to the gym. And I wonder why my kids are spoiled.

2. I had a date with JIM. I did 45 minutes on the elliptical machine. Can I get a whooop whooop??

3. After picking up Carson from school, we came home, put Brady down for a nap, and I attempted to take a nap too. Notice the word "attempted".... Yeah, try taking a nap with a needy 4 year old. Doesn't work very well.

4. While trying to nap, Carson made me cut his toe nails. Really Carson? I am trying to sleep!! Does this have to happen right now?? Yes. Apparently it did.

5. I fixed Mac n Cheese with hot dogs for dinner. And not just for the kids. One of our family favorites. Shhhhh.... Don't tell anyone.

6. I selfishly made Gingersnaps tonight for myself instead of the Chocolate Chip cookies that everyone else loves. No one else likes gingersnaps, but I do. Just means more for me to eat.

7. I mentioned to Steve that I did not receive a single birthday gift for my birthday last month. Not one single gift. Yep. Wow. You know you are getting old when you don't get to unwrap anything for your birthday. Kinda sad. But whatever, I'm not bitter or anything. So, tonight, Steve brought home a cake and a present. The kids sang "Happy Birthday" and I unwrapped a Sonicare toothbrush.... (silence). I love my practical husband more than anything in the world.

8. I secretly (not so secretly anymore) dreamed of living in Salinas today. Moving back is not really an option so I really should stop daydreaming about it. But it is a nice thought every now and again.

9. I confess that this blog entry is really boring and I sincerely apologize. This whole blog writing thing is not like riding a bike, it takes some getting used to again.

10. I really really stayed up way to late.

But here's to me back on the blog.

Bring it!

The BLOG Return

Ok, so I realize that it has been quite a while since I have last "blogged".

I have been agonizing about what to "blog" about. I thought because it has been a while, it should probably be good, right?

So much has happened in my life since my last blog. I wondered, should I blog about all the cool things I did over the summer?

How about Steve's and my trip to Kauai?

Or, how my photography business is keeping me really busy?

Or even how I have put my life on a hard core schedule and am doing my best to try to hold true to it?

Or what it is like in the life of a stay-at-home mom who apparently doesn't stay home because she has almost 23,000 miles on her car that she has only had since last DECEMBER?

Or how cute my boys are?

Or maybe how Ashton Kutchar isn't that funny on Two and a Half Men?

Yep, so many things to blog about. But instead, I am just letter vomiting about nothing really.

But I do have a plan. Refer to the item above about creating a schedule and sticking to it... well, yeah, I am going to have a Monday, Top 10 blog.

YEP! Real original. I know.

But hey.
I have to have focus and a goal to keep me on schedule.

So, stay tuned.

FYI... Tomorrow is Monday.

What is my Top 10 going to be?

Don't worry, I have no idea either.

But tomorrow we shall find out.

NITE.

Blog Absent

Wow.

I can't believe that it has been almost 2 months since my last blog post.

Sorry. Not that you care. But I do.

Gonna jump back on the band wagon.

Soon.
I hope.

Stay tuned.

Happy Birthday COW

Everyone celebrates stuffed animal birthdays right?

I mean, really?

When Carson starting claiming that Cow was turning three on his next birthday, I didn't think much of it. Then he obsessively (wonder where he gets that trait from?) started telling me that we needed to plan for his party. I figured I would just roll with it.

So, we made invitations and delivered them to the neighbor boys.

Decorated the dining room.

And made a cake.

Friends came over and we celebrated....

Here is a picture of Cow eating his cake:

Guests brought gifts:

Suzanne even called to wish Cow a happy birthday:

Perfectly normal right?

Totally.

Unfortunately, Carson is already planning Doggie's birthday and Giraffe's birthday parties now.

Ohhh man. It's gonna be a long summer....

What's in YOUR purse?

On a daily basis I dig and dig through my purse looking for my keys... or my phone... or something hiding amid the mess on the bottom of my purse.

Yesterday during a recent shopping transaction, I instead of my wallet, I pulled out a half eaten sticky fruit twist left over from last weeks visit to Jamba Juice. It was pretty disgusting and I was kind of embarrassed.

I thought to myself, "Maybe it is time to clean out my wallet."

It wasn't just a thought, it was time.

So here it is my cute little nude colored Michael Kors hobo.

And inside it...

Here we go....

My Wallet - Yes, a necessity. It needs to be cleaned out too, but come on, let's not get ahead of ourselves.

Checkbook - Only to pay the therapist. No, really.

To Do List - I probably make 10 a day, and don't complete any of them.

Glasses Case - Glasses are actually stored safely inside.

Receipt - From a recent hair salon excursion

Clothes Pins - Jane Wilson put them there during a photo shoot in Salinas.

Vitamins - Not sure why they are in my purse.

Coors Light Bottle Opener - Just in case? I have no idea where that is from either.

Chap Stick - A necessity.

Lip Gloss - TWO colors.

Cliff Bar - Open, half eaten. That was my lunch yesterday.

EmergenC - Generic kind. Thought I was getting sick.

6 pens and a highlighter - Because apparently one isn't enough

Business Cards - Love them. Gotta have them at all times.

Kids Toys - Duh.

Empty Container of Mints - My kids eat EVERYTHING!!

Sunscreen - Just in case.

Tampons - Well, secrets out...

Playland Tickets - Someday, maybe I will take my kids there again. Maybe. Just maybe.

Hair Ties - Three of them. This is proof that there is THREE of them in there. But why is it that I can never fine just ONE?

Gift Cards, Macy's Star Rewards, Coupons, Frequent Shopper Cards, Member Rewards Cards, etc....

and

A TC3 Temporary Tattoo.

So, I challenge YOU...

What's in YOUR purse?

Right Now...

So here I sit, on this blustery Saturday morning, drinking my coffee, reading some of my favorite blogs (like this one, this one, and this one) as the kids play. As I was reading, I was thinking, "I really need to update my blog. But I have nothing "monumental enough to blog" about." Then I came across this blog, that lead me to this blog, which, well... led me to the following...

Right now, this is what my life looks like:

My husband is on the couch, looking at cars on ebay on his ipad.

Carson is busy stamping. This lovely stamp pad is a gift from our dear friends the Harmons. I have yet to repay them for their generosity. But I must say, as messy as it is, Carson has sure gotten his use out of it, and that is all that matters... Right?

Also, note the Kleenex box in front of him, because he is sick... again.

And the sippy cup represents his chocolate milk that he drinks EVERY morning.

And the homemade blanket, courtesy of Delaine, on the couch that Carson snuggles up on every morning as he drinks his chocolate milk and watches cartoons.

Nick Jr.
Network of choice.

Fresh Beat Band.
Kid show of choice.

Marina
Carson's character of choice.
He loves her.

The coffee station.

Steve makes my coffee EVERY morning.

Don't over look the chocolate syrup for the kids milk. This is an EVERY morning routine. Including the fact that this is exactly the way Steve leaves the counter. So EVERY day, I put the condiments back, and shut the cabinet.

This is what my children had for breakfast this morning.

Don't judge.

This is the favorite toy of the day.

A brand new PIRATE SHIP water table that Brady received from his Auntie Ging and Uncle Stephen. Both kids LOVE it!! Brady actually thinks it is a swimming pool because I found him sitting in it yesterday.

And here's me... Well, not a picture of me because well, it is morning, my hair is a mess, I have no make up on and I smell. But a picture of all my camera equipment ready to go. I am taking pictures of my very first wedding today!!!

And to top off my wonderful morning, this is a picture of the resort we just booked.
YEP!! A trip to HAWAII is officially in our future!!!

So, that is a look at my RIGHT NOW.

willette's right now

Aloha!

The Mammogram

It's official....

I do NOT have Breast Cancer.

Not that I really thought I did, but now I know that I do not .

It's just amazing how once you have had cancer, your whole life changes. I was fortunate to have survived a treatable form of Thyroid Cancer called Papillary Cancer. However, ever since then, I have been extremely paranoid about having Cancer again. It's really a scary feeling.

You see, the first time I was diagnosed, I had no symptoms. I was living my life as what I thought was a healthy adult. Then came along that dreaded day in 2005 when my doctor felt a lump in my throat. Shortly after that, I sat in the my doctor's office, ironically the same day crazy Tom Cruise jumped up and down on Oprah's couch, and was told that I had CANCER.

I had surgery to remove my entire thyroid. I endured a significant amount of radiation to kill any remaining thryroid tissue filled cancer cells. And currently live my life, as far as I know, CANCER free.

Everyday I have to take a pill to regulate my thyroid levels. I have regular check ups. I have blood work done every 6 months. I have yearly ultrasounds done on my neck. And with every pill, every check up, every blood draw, every ultrasound, it is a reminder that I have had CANCER. And every time, as the doctors review my chart, I wonder, could I have CANCER again? I mean, that is why they are checking.... right?

Can I also add that I have lost THREE friends in the last few years. THREE dear friends who have passed away in their mid 30's, leaving behind a family and children who adored them. So, when the thought of cancer runs through my mind, I get sad... and really scared. It's a lonely place.

Then last week when I sat in the doctor's office because I had sharp shooting pains in my breasts... my mind wandered. It wandered to places that I couldn't help but let it go. When the doctor said I have lumpy fibercystic breast tissue, and suggested that I have a mammogram... again, my mind wandered to that "what if" place. Why is she suggesting that I get a mammogram at 33 years old? Knowing my chances were slim, I still couldn't help but wonder "What if I have Breast Cancer?"

So, today was the day. I got to have my lovely breasts squished between the glass. Usually I have them pushed up against the glass, but this time it was a little different. The actually procedure wasn't nearly as bad as I had anticipated. The worst part was going half the day without deodorant. But I stuck it out. Or stuck THEM out. Literally speaking.

When the tech left the room to review my images with the radiologist... I was again left wondering for those, what seemed like forever, few minutes... "What did she see?"

Only for her to return to my room and announce that there were no signs of breast cancer.

I don't need another mammogram until I am 40 years old.

Waaaahooo!!

Like I said, it's not like I thought I had breast cancer, but what a relief it is to know that I do not!

At least not today.

God Bless You
Tammy Herrera
Shawna Kilbert
Blair Weber

I miss you.

Life Through the Eyes of the Littlest Photographer

Carson must have my passion for photography.

He LOVES taking pictures.

And by taking pictures, I mean he LOVES being behind the camera, NOT in front of it.

While I was busy uploading pictures of my own, Carson was running around with my old digital camera.

I was in tears laughing when I uploaded the things he had captured.

So here it is,
